Rajinder Goyal
Rajinder Goyal has always been described as "the greatest spin bowler who has not played Test cricket". He passed away recently at the age of 77 due to a long illness. But for Goyal's long and important career, it would be somewhat unfair. In 24 years, 750 wickets have been taken at an average of 18.58 in local cricket in India, including 637 in Ranji Trophy, a record that is now beyond anyone's reach. Rajinder Goyal is a left-arm spinner. Bishan Singh Bedi, Irapalli Prasanna, Srinivasan Venkataraghavan and Bhagwat Chandrasekhar also emerged on the Indian cricket horizon at the height of their careers. With these four getting priority in the Indian team, Goyal missed his chance forever. Bedi is also the most successful and influential left-arm spinner in the quartet. As a result, Goyal's Test entry became even tougher. But he never cared. 'What could I do other than keep bowling well?' That is their question. His 'good bowling' is a matter of terror. Batsmen of different ages like Vijay Manjrekar, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar used to like him. Traditional spin bowlers give the ball a lot of height. But Goyal doesn't want to give too much height. So the ball used to hit the batsmen. This style is somewhat close to that of English spinner Derek Underwood. Gavaskar notes that this style of batting does not allow him to leave the crease and use the traditional weapon against traditional spin bowlers in front of Goyal. So his batting had to be played on the backfoot.
Goyal used to deceive the batsmen by changing the speed. Another highlight of Goyal is, His bowling was effective on all types of pitches. Goyal or his Padmakar Shivalkar did not get a chance to play Tests. But his bowling enriched the Indian batsmen. Undoubtedly, Goyal and Shivalkar are credited with making India a paradise not only for spinners but also for batsmen who play spin bowling effectively. Goyal's specialty is that he is not bitter about anything or anyone. Goyal from Haryana, Bedi from Delhi. The two were best friends to the end.
